Prothrombin is a protein produced by your liver. It is one of the many factors in your blood that help it to clot appropriately. Prothrombin Time (PT) test is used to evaluate blood clotting. It is also used to monitor the drug dose if you are taking the blood thinning medication like Warfarin. Sometimes your doctor may order this test prior to surgery.

Since PT comprises reactions of coagulation that occurs in tissue injury & common pathways of coagulation, deficiencies in the activity of Factors II, V, VII, X or fibrinogen may prolong the PT. INR standardizes the reporting of PT values in Warfarin anticoagulated patients.
